St. Patrick’s Day
Saint Patrick's Day celebrates the death
of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The party evolved into a
celebration of Irish culture with parades, special food, music, dancing,
drinking, and greenery.
St. Patrick's Day is celebrated every year
on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the 5th century. St. Patrick's Day
2023 will take place on Friday 17 March. The Irish have celebrated this day as
a religious holiday for over 1000 years. On St Patrick's Day, which falls
during Christian Lent, Irish families traditionally went to church in the
morning and celebrated in the afternoon.
Who Was St. Patrick?
Saint Patrick, who lived in the 5th
century, is Ireland's patron saint and national apostle. Born in Roman Britain,
he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He later
escaped but returned to Ireland and is credited with bringing Christianity to
his people.
When Was the First St. Patrick’s Day Celebrated?
Since around the 9th or 10th century, the
Irish have observed the Roman Catholic feast of St. Patrick's Day on March 17.
The first St. Patrick's Day parade was not in Ireland but in America. Records
show that on March 17, 1601, a St. Patrick's Day parade was held in a Spanish
settlement in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. The parade and a celebration
of St. Patrick's Day a year earlier had been organized by the Irish vicar of
the Spanish colony, Ricardo Artur.
More than a century later, on March 17, 1772, nostalgic Irish soldiers serving in the English army marched through New York to honor Ireland's patron saint. From there, excitement grew for St. Patrick's Day parades in New York, Boston, and other early American cities.
